Mathew 10-11

Mission of the Twelve.
Here are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, who is called Peter; and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee; and John his brother; Philip; and Bartholomew; Thomas; and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus; and Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananaean; and Judas, who betrayed Jesus.~~Matthew 10:2-4

The Twelve were commissioned to As you go, make this announcement: The kingdom of heaven has come near.`~Matthew 10:7

Jesus prepared the apostles to go where welcomed and bless those eager to hear the good news. Jesus did make warning on those to watch, but reminded that God the Father will always be protective of the faithful.

  1. We sometimes find it hard to reach out in our own communities to invite strangers into our church or discuss our faith with others. Why, because it has always been considered taboo to discuss religion? Are we afraid of what others will share? Here are twelve common men who are willing to go out and spread the good news of Jesus Christ - they are leaving their homes and traveling afar. These chapters certainly put a new spin on our "fears" of public display of our faith.

  2. So, this reading was among the first in the Bible study, and for me, no doubt, the most uncomfortable of all of the instructions from Christ...to evangelize. Whether its because we grew up seeing the rise and fall of tele-evangelists, street preachers we thought were wacky and didn't go about it in the most presentable way, or jusr being categorized as Jesus freaks, ourselves...it is what we need to do while on earth. And although I do not feel comfortable evangelizing in the old sense of the word, I find a certain group of very needy youth confiding in me. I tell them that I see my purpose at work quite broad, and I think they see that. So, although I do not feel comfortable with evangelizing as I knew it, maybe it is exactly what I am doing-in my presence, and words, and love I share with these kids.
